If you don't specify a color/map, then the background color and map specified in the Rhino Environment dialog are used by default. Using large bucket sizes might require more memory. The Environment section in V-Ray render parameters is where you can specify a color or a texture map to be used during GI and reflection/refraction calculations. The Bucket sampler, on the other hand, stores only the summed result of all sub-samples for a pixel and so usually requires less RAM. This is especially true for the Progressive sampler, which stores the entire image in memory before beginning the rendering process. Image samplers require a substantial amount of RAM to store render information.
